Coming all the way from Union City, California we are thrilled to have the only 'grandma' taiko group, Heiwa Taiko join us for the festival this year. Heiwa (Hay-Wah) Taiko is based at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City, CA. Heiwa means Peace in Japanese.
'We are a group of older women (average age 73) who perform Taiko (Japanese traditional drumming). Our group is dynamic, energetic and inspirational. The sound of the 19" taiko drums sends excitement to the mind, body and spirit. We perform about 20 times a year at various venues in the SF Bay Area. Our favorite is to play in Ashland at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We also enjoy performing at San Quentin for the inmates because it is enlightening. Our taiko has broaden our outlook on life. It is a wonderful vehicle for the Heiwa's to meet, practice, dine and enjoy each other company.'
